The history of Lithia Springs is ancient and spans from the prehistoric period to modern times. For thousands of years Lithia Springs was a medicine spring where the sick and the wounded came to drink its life-giving water. Recent archaeological excavations at the site of Lithia Springs have discovered a lost and forgotten prehistoric stone temple that is larger than the famous Stonehenge of England and perhaps older (see Lithia Photos). Medicine bowls - smooth, round basins carved within huge boulders and a giant 25 foot high smiling turtle carved from stone have been uncovered from the earth. These archaeological discoveries indicate that for thousands of years people have made pilgrimages to this ancient medicine spring to heal their body, mind, and spirit. It was the Indians sacred belief that this medicine spring was a gift from the Great Spirit where the “Spirit of Healing” flowed from the earth. Today, the water that flows from this ancient medicine spring is is no longer called the “Spirit of Healing” as it is now called LITHIA.

History tells us that Lithia Springs was the spiritual, healing, and political center for the southern Cherokee. When the Cherokee first arrived in Georgia, during the early 14th century, they believed that Yowa their great creator had guided them to where healing waters flowed from a stone temple built by the ancients. To gain access to the healing powers of the stone temples water the Cherokee had to fight the Creek Indian Tribe over control of the ancient springs. Instead of warfare the two tribes agreed to play a Lacrosse game, with the winner taking control of the springs. The Cherokee won the Lacrosse game and with the victory came the right to control the ancient stone temple and the healing Spring.
In 1888 the Sweet Water luxury hotel and health resort with 250-rooms was opened at Lithia Springs. A miniature train called the "the little Anna" ran from the Sweet Water Hotel to Lithia Springs.

When you visit the historic springs you will see for yourself many amazing ancient wonders and mysteries that include a giant 25 foot Smiling Turtle that has stood guard over an ancient medicine spring for thousands of years. If you look closely at the Smiling Turtle you will notice that it has human features (anthropomorphic) indicating that it is more than a guardian for it is also a messenger.
