From Neolithic Age To Present

The History of Lithia Springs healing water spans over a period of thousands of years. Recent archaeological excavations at the site of Lithia Springs have discovered a lost and forgotten ancient wonder of the world. Larger than the famous Stonehenge of England and perhaps older, is an ancient stone temple that was built thousands of years ago to pay homage to the healing powers of a “medicine spring”. Today, a giant stone effigy of a Smiling Turtle and a Laughing Frog still stand guard over the springs. Medicine bowls - smooth, round basins carved within huge boulders - survive today. These indicate that for thousands of years people have made pilgrimages to this “medicine spring” to heal their body, mind, and spirit. The ancients believed earth’s healing magic emanated from this very special spring. It was the Indians sacred belief that the “Spirit of Healing”, flowed from this “medicine spring” as a gift from the Great Spirit. Today we call the water that flows from this ancient healing spring LITHIA™.

For thousands of years one of the largest earthen pyramid in North America was part of ancient Lithia Springs Water Temple complex. The size of this earthen pyramid was 10 acres in area at its base with the height of approximately 100 feet. It was so large that the first settlers in the mid 1800's built a stage coach house on top of it. Tragically, just a few years ago this ancient wonder was destroyed to build an elevated road with its fill dirt. Behind the springs was a huge mysterious white quartz crystal eagle that could only be seen from the air, this national treasure was also destroyed for the sake of urban development.

History tells us that Lithia Springs was the spiritual, healing, and political center for the southern Cherokee for hundreds of years. When the Cherokee first arrived in Georgia, during the early 14th century, they believed that Yowa their creator had guided them to where healing waters flowed from a stone temple built by the ancients. To use the healing powers of the stone temples water the Cherokee had to fight the Creek Indian Tribe over control of the ancient springs. Instead of warfare the two tribes agreed to play Lacrosse game, with the winner taking control of the springs. The Cherokee won the Lacrosse game and with victory came the right to control the ancient stone temple and the healing Spring.

A miniature train called the "the little Anna" ran from the Sweet Water Hotel to Lithia Springs.

History is still being made at Historic Lithia Springs. Lithia Mineral Water Inc. will be opening to the public the ancient wonder of the world, the Lithia Water Temple.
