ASDs are a group of developmental disabilities that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges for developing children. In the United States, the most recent estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for autism prevalence are about 1% or 1 in 110 children, based on population studies in a select number of areas around the country.

Increasing the previous federal estimate of 1 in 150, the new data suggest that 1% of children now exhibit some symptoms of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a collection of neurological conditions whose symptoms may range from mild social impairment to more serious communication, language and cognitive deficits. The estimate also represents a stunning 57% increase in prevalence since 2002, when health officials first began a nationwide effort to quantify the risk of autism in childhood.

There is great controversy as to its cause, but regardless there is a general growing belief that there is an autism epidemic. There is also controversy as to "if" there is an autism epidemic, but one thing is certain, you or someone you know probably has an autistic child.

Medical science still does not know for certain the cause of autism. However, medical research analyzing the mineral content of the hair of autistic children reveals the presence of toxic metals, nutrient mineral deficiencies, and often indications of a reduced ability to eliminate toxins from the body. Of particular interest are the studies conducted by researchers who analyzed hair samples of both the autistic child and their mother.

There was a recent research study conducted by Dr. Amy S. Holmes [1] of the level of mercury in the hair of infants (aged 12-24 months) who later were diagnosed with autism compared to controls. This study found that the autism group had a much higher amount of mercury in their baby hair compared to controls, which suggests an inability to excrete mercury. The research also revealed that the autism group of children ages 3-6, had a 30% lower level of lithium with a marginal statistical significance. Overall, the autism group had low levels of sodium, chromium, and sulfur, with the low chromium level being the most statistically significant.

Low lithium levels in the young children ages 3-6 years (-30%, p=0.04), in the mothers of children with ASD (-39%, p=0.05) and especially in the mothers of young children ages 3-8years (-56%, p=0.005). The consistency of this result in the mothers and the children, and the high statistical significance in the young mothers, suggests that this is an important factor in ASD. Lithium in Mothers: In the mothers of children with ASD, the level of lithium was 40% lower than the mothers of typical children, and the result was marginally statistically significant . Also, when the mothers of autism group children ages 3-8 was considered, the difference was more pronounced (56% lower) and more statistically significant. Since low lithium was also observed in the younger children with ASD, this makes the result especially interesting. Lithium concentrations are highest in the brain,[2] and are highest during the first trimester, [3] so a deficiency of it during pregnancy could adversely affect fetal development, and especially brain development. Also, low levels of lithium in humans have been found to correlate with a wide range of behavioral problems, including aggression and decreased sociability.
